1:1  I wrote the first book, Theophilus, about everything that Jesus began · to do and to teach,
1:2  until the day when, having given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen, he was taken up;
1:3  to whom also he presented himself alive after · his passion by many proofs, being seen by them over a period of forty days and telling them what concerns the kingdom of God.
1:4  · While he was with them, he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
1:5  for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
1:6  So when they had come together, they asked him, saying, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?”
1:7  But he said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by · his own authority.
1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all · Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
1:9  And when he had said these words, while they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him away from · their eyes.
1:10  And while they were gazing into the sky, as he was going, · behold, two men stood by them in white robes,
1:11  and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into the sky? This · Jesus, who was taken up from you into · heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him going into · heaven.”
1:12  Then they returned to Jerusalem from a hill · called “The Mount of Olives,” which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s walk away.
1:13  And when they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room, where they were lodging; · Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James.
1:14  These all were devoting themselves with a single purpose to prayer, with the women and Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
1:15  And in · those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (a crowd of people, about a hundred and twenty, had gathered together), · and said,
1:16  “My brothers, it was necessary for the Scripture to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand · · by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became guide to those who arrested Jesus.
1:17  For he was numbered among us and received his allotted share of this ministry.”
1:18  (Now this man bought a field with the reward of his unjust deed, and falling headfirst he burst open in the middle and all his intestines gushed out. ·
1:19  And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, “Field of Blood.”)
1:20  “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, ‘Let his house become · deserted, and let there be no · one living in it’; and ‘Let another take over · his responsibilities.’
1:21  It is necessary, therefore, that of the men who have accompanied us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us,
1:22  beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us—that one of these become with us a witness of his resurrection.”
1:23  So they proposed two, Joseph · called Barsabbas (who was called Justus), and Matthias.
1:24  And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, the one who knows the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen ·
1:25  to take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned aside to go to his own · place.” ·
1:26  And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostles.
