1:3 All things were created by him, and apart from him not a single thing was created that has been created.
1:4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
1:5 · The light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has not understood it.
1:6 There came on the scene a man sent from God, whose name was John.
1:7 He came as a witness to bear testimony about the light so that everyone might believe through him.
1:8 He was not the light, but came to bear testimony about the light.
1:9 The true light, · which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
1:10 He was in the world, and the world was created by him, but the world did not know him.
1:11 He came to that which was his own, but his own people did not accept him.
1:12 But as many as did accept him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in · his name,
1:13 who were born, not from human stock or from a physical impulse or by a husband’s decision, but by God.
1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we gazed on · his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
1:15 John testified about him and cried out, saying, “This is he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is greater than I, because he existed before me.’”
1:16 For from · his fulness we have all received · one gracious gift after another.
1:17 For the law was given through Moses; · grace and · truth came through Jesus Christ.
1:18 No one has ever seen God. The only Son, himself God, the one who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.
1:19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
1:20 · He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.”
1:21 So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he replied, “No.”
1:22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us so we can give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
1:23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”
1:24 Now those who had been sent out included some · Pharisees.
1:25 So they asked him, · saying, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”
1:26 John answered them, · saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands among you one whom you do not know,
1:27 the one coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals.”
1:28 This took place in Bethany on the far side of the Jordan where John was · baptizing.
1:29 On the following day John saw · Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, the one who takes away the sin of the world!
1:30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I, because he existed before me.’
1:31 I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.”
1:32 Then John testified, saying, “I saw the Spirit coming down as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him.
1:33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, it is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
1:34 I myself saw it, and I bear witness that this man is the Chosen One of God.”
1:35 Again, on the following day, John was standing · there with two of · his disciples.
1:36 · Looking intently at · Jesus as he walked about, John said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”
1:37 · The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed · Jesus.
1:38 When Jesus turned around · · and saw them following him, he said to them, “What do you want?” They · said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
1:39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him · that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
1:40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard John and followed Jesus.
1:41 The first thing he did was to find · his own brother · Simon and say to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated “Christ”).
1:42 He brought him to · Jesus. Jesus looked at him · intently and said, “You are Simon, the son of John; you will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).
1:43 The following day Jesus decided to go to · Galilee, and he met Philip. And Jesus said to him, · “Follow me.”
1:44 Now Philip was · from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.
1:45 Philip found · Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one of whom Moses wrote in the law, and of whom the prophets wrote—Jesus, the son of Joseph, a man from Nazareth.”
1:46 And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, · “Come and see.”
1:47 Jesus saw · · Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, one in whom there is no deceit!”
1:48 Nathanael asked him, “How did you get to know me?” Jesus answered him, · saying, “Before · Philip called you, while you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.”
1:49 Nathanael declared to him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!”
1:50 Jesus responded, · saying to him, “Is it because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree that you believe? You will see greater things than that.”
1:51 Then he said to him, “I tell you the solemn truth: you will see · heaven standing open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
