13:1  It was just before · the festival of Passover, and Jesus, knowing · that his hour had come · to depart from · this world to the Father, showed his love to · his own who were in the world, loving them to the very end.
13:2  · The devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Jesus. During the evening meal
13:3  Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to · God,
13:4  got up from the table, · laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist.
13:5  Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet · and to dry them with the towel tied around his waist.
13:6  He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my · feet?”
13:7  Jesus answered · him, saying, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will come to understand later.”
13:8  Peter said to him, “You will never wash my · feet!” Jesus replied, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”
13:9  Simon Peter exclaimed, “Lord, then wash not only · my feet but also my hands and my head!”
13:10  Jesus said to him, · “The one who has bathed has no need to wash, except for his feet, but is clean all over. And you men are clean, but not all of you.”
13:11  For he knew who was about to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
13:12  So when Jesus had washed · their feet and put on · his outer garments, · he sat down at the table again and said to them, “Do you understand what I have just done for you?
13:13  You call me · ‘Teacher!’ and · ‘Master!’ and you speak rightly, for so I am.
13:14  If I, then, your Master and Teacher, have washed your · feet, · you also ought to wash one another’s · feet.
13:15  For I have given you an example, that just as I have done to you, you also are to do.
13:16  I tell you the solemn truth, the servant is not greater than his master, nor is the one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.
13:17  If you know these things, blessed are you if you put them into practice.
13:18  I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled, ‘The one who eats my · bread has lifted up his heel against me.’ ·
13:19  I am telling you this now, before it takes place, so that when it does take place you will believe that I am he.
13:20  I tell you the solemn truth, whoever receives one whom I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
13:21  After saying these things, · Jesus became troubled in spirit, and testified, · saying, “I tell you the solemn truth, one of you will betray me.”
13:22  The disciples began to look at one another, at a loss to know about whom he was speaking.
13:23  One of · his disciples—the one Jesus loved—was reclining at table close beside · · Jesus. ·
13:24  So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus who it was of whom he had spoken.
13:25  So that disciple, leaning back against the chest of Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?”
13:26  Jesus replied, · “It is the one to whom I will give this morsel of bread after I have dipped it in the dish.” · Then he dipped the morsel and gave it to Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son.
13:27  · After Judas had taken the morsel of bread, Satan entered into him. · Jesus said to him, · “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
13:28  Now none of those reclining at table knew why he said this to him.
13:29  Some of them thought, since Judas used to keep the money box, that Jesus had said to him, · “Buy what we need for the festival,” or that he should give something to the poor.
13:30  So after taking the morsel of bread, Judas went out at once; and it was night.
13:31  When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and · God is glorified in him.
13:32  If · God is glorified in him, · God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.
13:33  Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and just as I told the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you also.
13:34  A new commandment I give to you: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.
13:35  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
13:36  Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow later.”
13:37  Peter said to him, · “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down · my life for you.”
13:38  Jesus replied, “Will you lay down · your life for me? I tell you the solemn truth, the rooster will not crow before you deny me three times.
