16:1  “I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
16:2  They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
16:3  And these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me.
16:4  But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes · you will remember that I told you about them. “I did not tell you these things · at the start because I was with you.
16:5  But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
16:6  But because I have told you these things, · sorrow has filled your · heart.
16:7  Nevertheless I am telling you the truth; it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go away, I will send him to you.
16:8  And he, when he comes, will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
16:9  in regard to sin, because they do not believe in me;
16:10  in regard to righteousness, · because I am going away to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
16:11  in regard to · judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.
16:12  “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
16:13  But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into · all truth, for he will not speak on his own, but will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you things yet to come.
16:14  He will glorify me, for he will receive what is mine · and tell it to you.
16:15  All that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that he will take what is mine · and declare it to you.
16:16  “A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while and you will see me.”
16:17  Some of his disciples therefore said to one another, “What is this that he is saying to us, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’ and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
16:18  So they kept saying, “What is this ‘little while’ of which he speaks? · We do not understand what he is talking about.”
16:19  Jesus knew · that they wanted to question him, so he said to them, “Are you deliberating with one another about this—that I said, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?
16:20  I tell you the solemn truth, you will weep and wail, and the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but · your sorrow will be turned into joy.
16:21  When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come; · but when the baby is born, she no longer remembers the anguish, because of the joy that a child has been born into the world.
16:22  · So for now you have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, · and no one will take · your joy from you.
16:23  · On that · day you will question me about nothing. I tell you the solemn truth: whatever you ask of the Father in · my name he will give to you.
16:24  Up till now you have asked for nothing in · my name. Ask, and you will receive, that · your joy may be complete.
16:25  “I have told you these things using veiled language. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in veiled language but will tell you plainly about the Father.
16:26  In that · day you will ask in · my name. · I am not saying to you that I will intercede with the Father on your behalf;
16:27  for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came forth from · God.
16:28  I came forth from the Father and have entered into the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”
16:29  His disciples said, · “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using veiled language!
16:30  Now we know that you know all things and have no need for anyone to question you. This is why we believe that you have come forth from God.”
16:31  Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe?
16:32  Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to · his own place, and you will leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
16:33  I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”
