6:1 After this Jesus went to · the other side of the Sea of Galilee (also called the Sea of Tiberias).
6:2 A large crowd was following · him because they saw the miraculous signs that he was performing on those who were sick.
6:3 Jesus went up · on the mountainside, and he sat down there with · his disciples.
6:4 (Now the Passover, the great festival of the Jews, was at hand.)
6:5 When Jesus lifted up his eyes · and saw that a large crowd was coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy bread so that these people may eat?”
6:6 He said this · to test him, because he himself knew what he was about to do.
6:7 Philip answered him, · “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not enough for them, that each one may receive a little.”
6:8 One of · his disciples, Andrew, · Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
6:9 “There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”
6:10 Jesus said, · “Have the people sit down.” (There was · plenty of grass in that place.) So the men sat down, about five thousand · in number.
6:11 Then Jesus took the loaves, · and after he had given thanks, distributed them to those who were sitting down; and he did the same with the fish, as much as they wanted.
6:12 And when the people had eaten their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather up the leftover pieces, so that nothing will go to waste.”
6:13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces of the five barley loaves · that were left over by those who had eaten.
6:14 So when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus had performed, they began to say, “This is truly the prophet who was to come into the world.”
6:15 Therefore when Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again up the mountainside alone.
6:16 Now when evening had come, his disciples went down · to the lake,
6:17 · got into a boat and started across the sea to Capernaum. · It had by then become dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. ·
6:18 The sea was getting rough because a strong wind had started to blow.
6:19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw · Jesus walking on the lake and coming near the boat, and they were terrified.
6:20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
6:21 Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore toward which they were going.
6:22 On the next day the crowd · was standing on the other side of the lake. They knew that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not gotten into the boat with · his disciples, · but that the disciples had left without him.
6:23 However, other boats from Tiberias had come ashore near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
6:24 So when the crowd realized that Jesus was not there, nor · his disciples, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum looking for · Jesus.
6:25 And when they found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
6:26 Jesus responded to them, · · saying, “I tell you the solemn truth, you are not looking for me because you saw miraculous signs, but because you ate the loaves and had all you wanted.
6:27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you; for on him God the Father has set his seal.” ·
6:28 Therefore they said to him, “What must we do to carry out the works · God requires?”
6:29 Jesus answered, · · saying to them, “This is the work that God requires, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
6:30 Then they said to him, “So what miraculous sign will you perform that we may see it and believe in you? What will you do?
6:31 · Our fathers ate · manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from · heaven to eat.’”
6:32 Jesus said to them, · “I tell you the solemn truth, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from · heaven, but it is · my Father who gives you the true bread from · heaven. ·
6:33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from · heaven and gives life to the world.”
6:34 So they said to him, “Sir, give us this bread from now on!” ·
6:35 Jesus said to them, · “I am the bread of life; the one who comes to me will never go hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty again.
6:36 But as I told you, · you have seen me and still you do not believe.
6:37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never turn away.
6:38 For I have come down from · heaven, not to do · my own will · but to do the will of him who sent me.
6:39 And this is the will of the one who sent me: that of all that he has given me I should lose none but raise them up on the last day.
6:40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who considers the Son and comes to believe in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
6:41 Then the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from · heaven.”
6:42 And they were saying, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? · · How can he now say, ‘I have come down from · heaven’?”
6:43 Jesus answered · them, saying, “Do not keep grumbling among yourselves.
6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
6:45 It stands written in the prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me.
6:46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the one who is from · God; he has seen the Father.
6:47 I tell you the solemn truth, the one who believes has eternal life.
6:49 · Your fathers ate manna in the wilderness, · and they died.
6:50 But here is the bread that comes down from · heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.
6:51 I am the living bread · that came down from · heaven. If anyone eats of this · bread, he will live for all time · and the bread that I will give is · my flesh—given on behalf of the life of the world.”
6:52 Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, “How can this man give us · his flesh to eat?”
6:53 Jesus therefore said to them, · “I tell you the solemn truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his · blood, you will have no life in you.
6:54 The one who feeds on my · flesh and drinks my · blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day;
6:55 · for my flesh is real food and · my blood is real drink.
6:56 The one who eats my · flesh and drinks my · blood dwells in me, and I in him.
6:57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.
6:58 This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like that which your fathers ate and died. The one who feeds on this · bread will live for all time.”
6:59 Jesus said these things when he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
6:60 Therefore, when a number of his disciples heard · it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; · who can understand it?”
6:61 But Jesus, aware · that his disciples were grumbling about it, · said to them, “Does this offend you?
6:62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was · before?
6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
6:64 But there are some among you who do not believe.” For from the beginning Jesus knew · those who would not believe, and who it was who would betray him.
6:65 And he said, “For this reason I have said to you, ‘No one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.’”
6:66 From this time, many of · his disciples turned back · and no longer associated with him.
6:67 Jesus therefore said · to the twelve, “You do not want to leave me like the others, do you?”
6:68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life,
6:69 and we have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
6:70 Jesus answered them, · “Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.”
6:71 (He was speaking · of · Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, for he, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.)
