9:1  · As he went on his way, Jesus saw a man blind from birth.
9:2  And his disciples questioned him, · saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or · his parents, that he was born blind?”
9:3  Jesus answered, “It is not that this man sinned, or · his parents; but it happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.
9:4  We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
9:5  As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
9:6  After saying this, he spat on the ground and made mud with his saliva; then he daubed the mud on the man’s eyes
9:7  and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means “Sent”). So he went away and washed, and came back able to see.
9:8  Then the neighbors and those who were used to seeing him · previously as a beggar said, “Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?”
9:9  Some said, “He is the one.” Others said, “No, but he looks like him.” But he himself kept saying, “I am the man.”
9:10  So they asked him, “How then were your eyes opened?” ·
9:11  He answered, “The man · called Jesus made mud, · daubed it on my · eyes, and said to me, ‘Go to · Siloam and wash.’ So I went there and washed, and I was able to see.”
9:12  · They said to him, “Where is that man?” He replied, “I do not know.”
9:13  They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.
9:14  Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud · and opened his · eyes.
9:15  Then the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He daubed mud on my · eyes, and I washed, and now I see.”
9:16  Then some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God · because he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, “How can a sinful man perform miraculous signs like this?” And there was a division among them.
9:17  So they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since it was your eyes that he opened?” · The man · replied, “He is a prophet.”
9:18  The Jews did not believe the report about him, that he had been blind and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight
9:19  and asked them, saying, “Is this · your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?”
9:20  His parents answered, · · saying, “We know that this is · our son and that he was born blind;
9:21  but how it is that he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his · eyes. Ask him, he is an adult. He will speak for himself.”
9:22  His parents said this · because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess Jesus to be the Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
9:23  For this reason · his parents said, “He is an adult, ask him.”
9:24  So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, “Give the glory to God! We know that this · man is a sinner.”
9:25  He replied, “Whether or not he is a sinner, I do not know. One thing I do know: whereas I used to be blind, I now see.”
9:26  Therefore they said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your · eyes?”
9:27  He answered them, “I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become his disciples too, do you?”
9:28  Then they scoffed at him, · saying, “You are a disciple of that man! But we are disciples of Moses!
9:29  We know that God has spoken to Moses, · but as for this fellow, we do not even know where he comes from.”
9:30  The man responded · to them, saying, “This is an amazing thing, that you do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my · eyes!
9:31  We know that God does not listen to sinners, · but if anyone is devout and does · his will, God listens to him.
9:32  Not since · time began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind.
9:33  If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”
9:34  They replied · to him, saying, “You were born completely in sin, and would you lecture us?” So they threw him out.
9:35  Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
9:36  The man replied, · saying, “And who is he, sir? Tell me, so that I may believe in him.”
9:37  Jesus said to him, · · “You have seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”
9:38  Then the man said, “I believe, Lord,” and he bowed in reverence before him.
9:39  · Jesus said, · “For judgment I came into · this world, so that those who cannot see may receive their sight, and that those who think they see may become blind.”
9:40  Some of the Pharisees who were near him heard this, and said to him, “Surely we are not blind too, are we?”
9:41  Jesus said to them, · “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now you are saying, ‘We can see,’ so · your guilt remains.
