10:1  After · this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.
10:2  And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into · his harvest.
10:3  Go then. I am sending you as lambs into the midst of wolves.
10:4  Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.
10:5  In whichever · house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’
10:6  And if there is a son of peace there, your peace will rest upon him; · but if not, it will return to you.
10:7  Remain in that · · house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
10:8  · “In whichever town you enter, and they receive you, eat what is placed before you,
10:9  and heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
10:10  In whichever · town you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into · its streets and say,
10:11  ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our · · feet we wipe off against you. But know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’
10:12  I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom on · that day than for that town.
10:13  Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, long ago they would have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
10:14  But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you!
10:15  And you, Capernaum! Will you be exalted to heaven? No. You will go down to · Hades.
10:16  “The one who listens to you listens to me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
10:17  The seventy-two returned · with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in · your name!”
10:18  He said · to them, “I saw · Satan as he fell, like a bolt of lightening from the sky.
10:19  I have given you · authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy; · nothing may hurt you at all.
10:20  However, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that · your names have been recorded in · heaven.”
10:21  At this · time Jesus was filled with joy by the Holy Spirit, · and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and · earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, · Father, for such was well-pleasing in your sight.
10:22  All things have been handed over to me by · my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son decides to reveal him.”
10:23  · Having turned to the disciples, he said to them privately, “Fortunate are the eyes that see what you see!
10:24  For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
10:25  Once a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
10:26  He · said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?”
10:27  In answer he · said, “You shall love the Lord · your God with all · your heart, and with all · your life, and with all · your strength, and with all · your mind, and · your neighbor as yourself.”
10:28  Jesus said · to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”
10:29  But he, wishing to justify himself, said to · Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
10:30  Jesus continued, · saying, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers. · After stripping him of his clothes and beating him, they went off, leaving him half dead.
10:31  Now by chance a priest was going down by · that way and, when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
10:32  So · too a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
10:33  But a Samaritan who was traveling came to where he was, and when he saw him, was moved with compassion for him.
10:34  · He went to him and bound up · his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
10:35  · The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, · saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay to you when · I come back.’
10:36  Which of these · three, do you think, became a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”
10:37  He · said, “The one who showed · mercy to him.” And Jesus said to him, · “Go, and you do the same.”
10:38  Now as · they continued on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest.
10:39  · She had a sister called Mary, who, · after she had seated herself at the feet of the Lord, was listening to · his teaching.
10:40  · But Martha was distracted by a lot of preparation. She burst in and · said, “Lord, do you not care that · my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.”
10:41  But in answer the Lord said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things,
10:42  but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the most important thing, which will not be taken away from her.”
