13:1  At that very time there were some present · · who told him about the Galileans whose · blood Pilate had mingled with · their sacrifices.
13:2  · In response he said to them, “Do you think that · these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered these things?
13:3  No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.
13:4  Or those · eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell · and killed them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others · living in Jerusalem?
13:5  No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”
13:6  Then he told this · parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in · his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it and found none.
13:7  And he said to the vineyard worker, ‘Look, for three years now, I have come looking for fruit on · this fig tree, and I find none. Remove it. Why · should it use up the soil?’
13:8  And he answered, saying to him, ‘Sir, leave it alone this year also, · until I dig around it and put on manure.
13:9  Perhaps it will bear fruit next · year; but if not, you may remove it.’”
13:10  Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath,
13:11  and there was a woman there who had had a spirit of weakness for eighteen years. · She was bent over and not able to straighten up at · all.
13:12  Seeing · her, · Jesus called out and said to her, “Woman you are released from · your weakness.”
13:13  · He placed his hands on her, and immediately she was made erect again and began to praise · God.
13:14  · Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, · the ruler of the synagogue said to the crowd, “There are six days in which work ought to be done. Come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” ·
13:15  Then the Lord answered him, · saying, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie · his ox or his donkey from the manger · to lead it away and to water it?
13:16  And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound · for eighteen · years, be released from · this bondage on the day of the Sabbath?”
13:17  · As he said these things, all his adversaries were put to shame, · while all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.
13:18  Then he said, “What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it?
13:19  It is like a mustard seed that a man took and threw into his garden. · It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the sky made nests in · its branches.”
13:20  And again he said, “To what shall I compare the kingdom of God?
13:21  It is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, until it was all leavened.”
13:22  Then Jesus went through town after town and village after village, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.
13:23  Someone said · to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them,
13:24  “Do your best to go in through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to go in and not be able.
13:25  “Once the owner of the house has risen and shut the door, and you are left standing outside, · knocking at the door, saying, ‘Sir, open the door for us!’ then he will respond to you, ‘I do not know you or where you are from.’
13:26  Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in · our streets.’
13:27  And he will speak, saying to you, ‘I do not know you or where you are from. Depart from me, all you workers of unrighteousness!’
13:28  There will be · weeping and · gnashing of teeth there, when you see Abraham and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves · cast outside.
13:29  “Then they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God.
13:30  But take note, some who are last will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
13:31  In that very · hour some Pharisees came, saying to him, “Leave and get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.”
13:32  And he said to them, “Go and tell · that fox, ‘Behold, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I complete my task.’
13:33  Nevertheless I must continue on my way today and tomorrow and the next day; because it is not possible for a prophet to die outside of Jerusalem.”
13:34  “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to it! How often I wanted to gather · your children together as a hen gathers · her brood under her wings, and you did not want it!
13:35  Behold, your house is left to you · desolate. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
