14:1 · When Jesus went into the house of a certain · ruler of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread and they were watching him closely,
14:2 · it happened that a certain man suffering from dropsy was right there in front of him.
14:3 · In response · Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to heal, or not?”
14:4 But they remained silent. So he took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away.
14:5 And to them, he said, “Which of you, when his son or his ox has fallen into a well, · does not immediately pull it up, even on the Sabbath day?”
14:6 And they were not able to give an answer to this.
14:7 He began speaking · a parable to those who had been invited when he noticed how they were seeking out the places of honor. He said to them,
14:8 “When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not take a seat in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you may have been invited by your host,
14:9 and the one who invited both you and him will say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then with shame you will proceed to take the least important place.
14:10 Rather, when you are invited, go and recline in the least important place so that when the one who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher!’ Then you will have glory in the presence of all who are reclining at table with you.
14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
14:12 Then he also said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner do not invite · your friends, or · your brothers, or · your relatives, or rich neighbors, in case they also invite you in return, and there would be a repayment to you.
14:13 But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.
14:14 Then you will be blessed, because they do not have a way to pay you back, for there will be a repayment for you at the resurrection of the righteous.”
14:15 When one of those reclining at table with him heard · him say these things, he said to him, “Blessed is the person who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
14:16 But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many guests.
14:17 And he sent · his servant at the hour of the banquet to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’
14:18 But one after another they all began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I bought a field, and I must go out to see it. I ask you, have me excused.’
14:19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out. I ask you, have me excused.’
14:20 And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and because of this I am not able to come.’
14:21 So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house was angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in here the poor, · the crippled, · the blind, and the lame.’
14:22 · The slave said, ‘Sir, what you ordered has been done, and still there is room.’
14:23 · The master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedgerows and urge people to come in, so that my house may be filled. ·
14:24 For I say to you that none of those men who were invited will taste my · banquet.’”
14:25 Great crowds of people were traveling with · him, and he turned and said to them,
14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate · his own father and · mother, and · wife and · children, and · brothers and · sisters, and even · · his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
14:27 Whoever does not carry · his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
14:28 “For which of you, wanting to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost, whether he has enough to bring it to completion;
14:29 otherwise, when he has laid the foundation and is not able to complete the tower, all who see it will begin to ridicule him,
14:30 saying, ‘This · man began to build and was not able to complete.’
14:31 Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand troops to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?
14:32 And if not, while he is yet a great way off, he will send a delegation and ask for terms of peace.
14:33 In the same way, therefore, everyone of you who does not renounce all · his possessions cannot be my disciple.
14:34 “Salt, then, is good; · but if · · salt has become insipid, with what shall it be seasoned?
14:35 Neither for soil or for the dung-heap is it of any use; they throw it away. The one who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
