18:1 Then Jesus told them a parable to the effect that they should continue to pray at all times and never give up.
18:2 He said, “There was a certain judge in a certain city who neither feared · God · nor had any regard for people.
18:3 There was a widow · in · that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Vindicate me against · my adversary.’
18:4 · He didn’t want to for a time. But later on he said to himself, ‘Though · I neither fear · God nor have regard for people,
18:5 yet because · this widow keeps bothering me, · I will vindicate her, so that by her coming she will not ultimately wear me out.’”
18:6 And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge · says.
18:7 Will not · · God certainly vindicate · · his elect, who cry to him day and night, and have patience with them?
18:8 I tell you, he will vindicate · them without delay; but will the Son of Man, when he comes, find · faith on · earth?”
18:9 He also told · this parable to some who were confident in themselves, because they were righteous, and treated · others with contempt. ·
18:10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed like this to himself: · ‘God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of mankind—swindlers, rogues, adulterers, or even like this · tax collector.
18:12 I fast twice a week; I tithe all that I get.’
18:13 The tax collector, however, standing at a distance, would not even raise his eyes to · heaven, but kept beating · his breast, saying, · ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house upright in the sight of God, · rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
18:15 Now people were bringing to him even · little ones so he would touch them. However, when the disciples saw it, they began to rebuke them.
18:16 · But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.
18:17 I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall certainly never enter it.”
18:18 Now a certain ruler asked him, saying, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18:19 And Jesus said to him, · “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one—· God.
18:20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor · your father and · mother.’
18:21 The · man replied, “All these I have kept since my youth.”
18:22 Upon hearing this, · · Jesus said to him, “One thing you still lack: sell all that you have and distribute the proceeds to the poor, and you will have treasure in · heaven. Then come, follow me.”
18:23 But when he heard this, he became very sad, for he was extremely wealthy.
18:24 Jesus looked at · him, · becoming very sad, and said, “How difficult it is for those who have · wealth to enter the kingdom of God!
18:25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God!”
18:26 Those who heard it said, · “Who, then, can be saved?”
18:27 Jesus · said, “What is impossible for mortal beings is possible for · God.”
18:28 Then Peter said, · “Look, we have left what was ours and followed you.”
18:29 Then Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, there is no one who has left home or wife or siblings or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God
18:30 who will not receive many times as much in · this age and, in the age to come, eternal life.”
18:31 Taking · the twelve aside, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything · written by the prophets regarding the Son of Man will be carried out.
18:32 For he will be handed over to the Gentiles and will be ridiculed and ill-treated and spat on.
18:33 Then after scourging him, they will kill him, but on the third day · he will arise again.”
18:34 But the twelve understood none of these things; in fact, what he said was kept hidden from them and they did not grasp what was being said.
18:35 · As Jesus drew near to Jericho, there was a blind man sitting by the roadside, asking for alms.
18:36 When he heard · a crowd going by, he inquired what this might be.
18:37 They told · him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.
18:38 So he called out, saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
18:39 · Those who were leading the way began to rebuke him that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
18:40 Jesus stopped · · and ordered the beggar to be brought to him. When the man had come near, · Jesus asked him,
18:41 “What do you want me to do for you?” He · said, “Lord, that I might see again.”
18:42 · · Jesus said to him, “See again! · Your faith has saved you.”
18:43 And immediately he could see again, and began to follow Jesus, giving glory to · God. And all the people, when they saw this, gave praise to God.
