19:1 · Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. ·
19:2 · There was a man called by the name of Zacchaeus; · he was a chief tax collector and he was wealthy.
19:3 · He was trying to see · Jesus—who he was—but was not able to on account of the crowd, because he was short in stature.
19:4 So he ran on ahead · and climbed up into a sycamore-fig tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
19:5 · As he came to that spot, Jesus looked up · and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and climb down, for today I must stay at · your house.”
19:6 So he hurried and climbed down and welcomed him, rejoicing.
19:7 And everyone, when they saw this, began to grumble, saying, “He went in to lodge with a sinful man.”
19:8 Zacchaeus, as he stood · there, said to the Lord, “Look, · half of what I own, Lord, I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will repay fourfold.”
19:9 Jesus said · to him, · “Today salvation has come to this house, since he too is a son of Abraham.
19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
19:11 As they were listening to · this, he went on to tell a parable, because · he was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
19:12 So he said, “A certain man of noble birth went to a distant country to acquire royal power for himself and then to return.
19:13 So, calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Conduct business until I return.’
19:14 · But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this person to rule over us.’
19:15 · When · he returned, having acquired · royal power, · he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, · that he might know what they had gained by doing business.
19:16 The first came before · him, saying, ‘Master, · your mina has gained ten minas.’
19:17 And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, you will have authority over ten cities.’
19:18 And the second came, saying, · ‘Your mina, Master, has gained five minas.’
19:19 So he said to this one as well, ‘And you, rule over five cities.’
19:20 Then the other came, saying, ‘Master, look, · your mina that I kept laid away in a piece of cloth,
19:21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man: you take up what you did not lay down, and reap what you did not sow.’
19:22 He said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, wicked servant. You knew, did you, that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
19:23 Why then did you not put my · money in the bank? Then when I returned I could have collected it with interest.’
19:24 Then he said to his attendants, ‘Take from him the mina and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
19:25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas!’
19:26 I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.
19:27 But as for · these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.”
19:28 · Having said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
19:29 · It happened that as he came near Bethphage and Bethany to the hill · called “The Mount of Olives,” he sent two of his disciples,
19:30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, where, as you enter, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. · Untie it and bring it here.
19:31 · If someone asks you why are you untying it, you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
19:32 Those who were sent away left · and found everything just as he has described it to them.
19:33 As they were untying · the colt, its owners said · to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
19:34 And they said, “Because the Lord has need of it.”
19:35 Then they brought it to · Jesus, and throwing their · cloaks onto the colt, they put · Jesus on it.
19:36 And as he rode along, they spread · their cloaks on the road.
19:37 As he was already approaching · to the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began to rejoice and praise · God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
19:38 saying, “Blessed is the coming one, the king, the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
19:39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke · your disciples.”
19:40 · He answered, “I tell you, if these are silent, the stones will cry out.”
19:41 · As Jesus drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,
19:42 saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on · this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
19:43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will build · an embankment against you and surround you and close in on you from every side.
19:44 And they will tear down both you and · your children within you, and they will not leave stone upon stone in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
19:45 · Having entered the temple, Jesus began to drive out those who were selling things,
19:46 saying to them, “It is written, · ‘My house shall be · a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”
19:47 · He began to teach · daily in the temple. The · chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy him,
19:48 but they could not find what they might do, because all the people were hanging on his words.
