2:1  · In · those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus for all the world to be registered.
2:2  This registration first took place while Quirinius was governing · Syria.
2:3  And everyone went to be registered, each to · his own town.
2:4  So Joseph also went up from · Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to · Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because · he was of the house and lineage of David,
2:5  to be registered with Mary, who was pledged in marriage to him, and who was expecting a child.
2:6  And while · they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth,
2:7  and she gave birth to a son, her · firstborn. · She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.
2:8  · There were shepherds in that · region · who were living out in the fields and keeping night-watch · over · their flock.
2:9  · An angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terribly afraid.
2:10  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I announce to you good news of a great joy which will be for all the people,
2:11  because this very day there has been born to you, in the city of David, a savior who is Messiah, the Lord.
2:12  And this is the sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”
2:13  And suddenly there was, with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising · God and saying,
2:14  “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth among those whom he has favored!”
2:15  · When the angels departed from them into · heaven, the shepherds began to speak to one another, “Well, let us go across to Bethlehem and see · this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”
2:16  So they came in haste and found · Mary and · Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.
2:17  And when they had seen him, they made it known concerning the message that had been spoken to them about · this child.
2:18  And all who heard marveled about what had been told to them by the shepherds.
2:19  · · Mary remembered all that had been said, pondering them in · her heart.
2:20  Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising · God for all that they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.
2:21  · When eight days had gone by and it was time to circumcise him, · his name was called · Jesus, the name he was called by the angel before he · was conceived in the womb.
2:22  And when the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present to the Lord
2:23  (as it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every male who first opens the womb will be called holy to the Lord”)
2:24  and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”
2:25  Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and · this man was righteous and devout, waiting expectantly for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
2:26  And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit · that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
2:27  So he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when · the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law,
2:28  · he received him in his arms and blessed · God and said,
2:29  “Now, Master, you are dismissing · your servant in peace, according to · your word;
2:30  because my eyes have seen · · your salvation,
2:31  which you have prepared in the presence of all · peoples,
2:32  a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory for your people Israel.”
2:33  · · His father and · mother were amazed at the things that were being said about him.
2:34  Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary · his mother, “Take note, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in · Israel, and for a sign that will be opposed
2:35  (and a sword will pierce your own · soul also), that thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
2:36  Now there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from · her virginity,
2:37  and then she was a widow until she was eighty-four years old. She did not leave the temple, worshipping night and day with fasting and prayer.
2:38  · At that very · hour she came up and began to give thanks to God and continued to speak of him to all who were waiting expectantly for the redemption of Jerusalem.
2:39  And when they had completed everything · according to the law of the Lord, they returned to · Galilee, to their own town, Nazareth.
2:40  And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.
2:41  Now his parents went · year by year to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover
2:42  And when he was twelve years old, when they went up according to the custom of the feast
2:43  and had completed the days, as · they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, and his parents did not know · it.
2:44  Thinking · him to be in the caravan, they went a day’s journey, but then began looking for him among their relatives and · acquaintances.
2:45  · When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.
2:46  Then after three days they found him in the temple, seated in the midst of the teachers, · listening to them and asking them questions.
2:47  And all who heard him were amazed at · his understanding and · his answers.
2:48  And when they saw him, they were astounded, and his mother said to him, · “Child, why did you treat us like this? Look, · your father and I have been terribly worried trying to find you.”
2:49  And he said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for me? Did you not know that I would have to be in · · my Father’s house?”
2:50  But they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them.
2:51  Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. And · his mother treasured all that was said in · her heart.
2:52  And Jesus advanced in · wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man.
