20:1 · One · day, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, along with the elders, came up
20:2 and spoke to him, saying, “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things; or who it is who gave you · this authority?”
20:3 He answered, · saying to them, “I will also ask you a question, and you must give me the answer:
20:4 The baptism of John, was it authorized from heaven or did it come from men?”
20:5 They · reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ then he will say, ‘Why did you not believe him?’
20:6 But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”
20:7 So they replied that they did not know where it was from.
20:8 Then · Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”
20:9 Then he began to tell the people · this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants; then he went away for quite some time.
20:10 · When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants so that they might give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
20:11 So he sent another servant; but they beat that one as well, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed.
20:12 So he sent a third; but they wounded this one too, and threw him out.
20:13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send · my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.’
20:14 When the tenants saw · him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may be ours.’
20:15 And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
20:16 He will come and destroy · those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When they heard · this, they said, “Surely not!”
20:17 But looking straight at them he said, “What then is this that is written: “The stone that the builders rejected—this one became the head of the corner’?
20:18 Everyone who falls on that · stone will be broken into pieces, and on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”
20:19 · The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on him · at that very · hour, for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them, but they feared the people. ·
20:20 So they watched him closely and sent spies who pretended to be righteous so they could catch him in his word, and in this way deliver him to the jurisdiction and · authority of the governor.
20:21 · They questioned him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach truthfully and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God.
20:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?”
20:23 But he realized their · duplicity, and said to them,
20:24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” They · said, “Caesar’s.”
20:25 He · said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are · God’s.”
20:26 And they were unable to trap him in what he said in the presence of the people, but, marveling at · his answer, they were reduced to silence.
20:27 Now some · Sadducees (who deny there is a resurrection) came up and questioned him,
20:28 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone’s brother dies, having a wife, but is childless, then his brother must take · the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.
20:29 Now there were seven brothers. · The first, having taken a wife, died childless.
20:33 So the woman—in the resurrection—of which of them will she be wife? For all seven had her as wife.”
20:34 And Jesus said to them, · “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,
20:35 but those who are considered worthy to attain to · that age and to the resurrection · from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
20:36 In fact, they can no longer die, since they are like angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
20:37 But that the dead are raised, even Moses made known, in the passage about the bush, for he calls the Lord, ‘the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.’
20:38 He is not God · of the dead, but of the living! For to him they are all alive.”
20:39 In response · some of the scribes said, “Teacher, you have spoken well!”
20:40 For no longer did they dare to question him about anything.
20:41 Then he said to them, “How can they say that the Messiah is to be a son of David?
20:42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
20:43 until I make · your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’
20:44 David thus calls him ‘Lord.’ So how could he be his son?”
20:45 As all the people were listening, · he said to his disciples,
20:46 “Beware of those scribes, who like to walk around in flowing robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at · feasts,
20:47 who devour the houses of widows and for the sake of appearance make lengthy prayers. These will receive the greater condemnation.”
