22:1  Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was drawing near.
22:2  · The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way how they might put Jesus to death, for they were afraid of the people.
22:3  Then Satan entered into Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve.
22:4  · He went and conferred with the chief priests and officers about how he might deliver up Jesus to them.
22:5  · They were delighted and decided to give him money.
22:6  · He agreed and began looking for an opportunity to deliver him up to them in the absence of a crowd.
22:7  Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, in which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.
22:8  So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it together.”
22:9  They · said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare it?”
22:10  He · said to them, “Look, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house into which he enters
22:11  and say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with · my disciples?”’
22:12  He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there.”
22:13  So they went and found everything as he had said to them; and they prepared the Passover meal.
22:14  And when the hour came, Jesus reclined at table and the apostles were with him.
22:15  · He said to them, “With great desire I desired to eat this · Passover with you before · I suffer!
22:16  For I say to you that I will certainly not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
22:17  Then he took a cup, and after he had given thanks he said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves.
22:18  For I say to you that from now on I shall certainly not drink · of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
22:19  Then taking bread and giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is · my body, which is given for you; do this in · remembrance of me.”
22:20  And he did the same with the cup after · they had eaten, saying, “This · cup is the new covenant in · my blood, which on your behalf is being poured out.
22:21  “But see, the hand of the one who will betray me is with me on the table.
22:22  For the Son of Man goes according to what has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.”
22:23  And they began to question among one another, · which of them it might be who would do this.
22:24  A dispute also arose · among them as to which of them seemed to be the greatest.
22:25  So Jesus said to them, “The kings of the nations exercise lordship over them and those in authority over them call themselves ‘benefactors.’
22:26  But with you it must not be so! Rather, let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and the leader like the one who serves.
22:27  For who is the greater, the one who reclines at table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But in your midst I am like the one who serves.
22:28  You · are the ones who have stayed with me in · my trials.
22:29  Just as my Father conferred on me kingly authority, so also do I confer it on you, ·
22:30  that you may eat and drink at · my table in · my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
22:31  Simon, Simon! Pay attention! · Satan has demanded permission to have all of you for himself, to sift you like · wheat,
22:32  but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. · And when you have returned, strengthen · your brothers.”
22:33  Peter · said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
22:34  Jesus · said, “I tell you, Peter, a rooster will not crow this day before you have denied three times that you know me.”
22:35  And he said to them, “When I sent you out without moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They · replied, “Nothing.”
22:36  He said · to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise · a knapsack. And the one who has no sword, let him sell · his cloak and buy one.
22:37  For I tell you that there must be fulfilled in me this that stands written: · ‘And he was numbered with the lawless.’ And indeed, that which concerns me has its fulfillment.”
22:38  So they said, “Lord, look! Here are two swords.” Then he told them, “It is enough.”
22:39  Then Jesus went out and made his way, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. ·
22:40  When he arrived · at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter a time of trial.”
22:41  Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down · and began to pray,
22:42  saying, “Father, if you are willing, take this · cup away from me. Yet, not · my will, but · yours be done.”
22:43  And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.
22:44  And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his · sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
22:45  · When he rose from · prayer, he went back to the disciples and found them sleeping from · grief.
22:46  · He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter a time of trial.”
22:47  While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming on ahead of them. · He went up to Jesus to kiss him,
22:48  but Jesus said to him, “Judas, is it with a kiss that you intend to betray the Son of Man?”
22:49  When those who were around him saw · what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
22:50  And a certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off · his right ear. ·
22:51  In response · · Jesus said, “Stop! No more of this.” And touching the ear, he healed it.
22:52  Then Jesus said to those who had come out against him—the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, “Why did you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
22:53  Day after day, when I was with you in the temple, you did not stretch out your hands against me. But this is your · hour, and the hour for the power of darkness.
22:54  Then they seized him and led him away, and brought him into the house of the high priest. · · Peter was following at a distance.
22:55  Some people had kindled · a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together. Peter sat down · among them.
22:56  Seeing · him sitting at the fire, a certain servant girl · looked at him intently and said, “This man also was with him.”
22:57  But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him!”
22:58  · After a little while someone else noticed him and said, “You also are one of them.” · But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”
22:59  Then after about an hour had passed a certain other person kept insisting, saying, “Surely this person also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.”
22:60  But Peter said, · “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
22:61  Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered · the word of the Lord that he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”
22:62  And he went out and wept bitterly.
22:63  Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to mock him and beat him,
22:64  and blindfolding him they kept asking, “Tell us, who is it that struck you?”
22:65  · They also said to him many other blasphemous things.
22:66  And when day came, the council of elders of the people was assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they had Jesus brought into · their council chamber
22:67  and said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe,
22:68  and if I question you, you will not answer.
22:69  But from · now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
22:70  They all said, · “Are you, then, the Son of God?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.”
22:71  Then they said, “What further need do we have of a witness? For we have heard it ourselves from · his own lips.”
