24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women came to the tomb, bringing the anointing spices that they had prepared.
24:2 They found · the stone rolled away from the tomb,
24:3 and going inside they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
24:4 · It happened that, while · they were wondering about this, · suddenly two men stood beside them dressed in dazzling attire.
24:5 The women were frightened · and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
24:6 He is not here, but he has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you, while he was still in · Galilee,
24:7 saying that it was necessary for the Son of Man to be delivered into the hands of sinful men and to be crucified and on the third day to rise again.”
24:9 And returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the others.
24:10 It was · · Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them. They kept telling these things to the apostles,
24:11 but these words seemed like nonsense to them, · and they did not believe them.
24:12 · But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; and bending down he saw the strips of linen by themselves, and he went away wondering to himself what had happened.
24:13 Now on that same day two of them were on their way to a village about seven miles from Jerusalem, Emmaus by name.
24:14 And they were talking with one another about all these things that had taken place.
24:15 · While they were talking and debating these things, it happened that Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them,
24:16 · but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
24:17 He said · to them, “What are · these matters that you are discussing with each other as you walk along?” · They came to a stop, looking sad.
24:18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered, saying to him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem · who does not know the things that have happened there in · these days?”
24:19 And he said to them, “What things?” They · answered him, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before · God and all the people,
24:20 that our chief priests and rulers delivered him up · · to be condemned to death and crucified him.
24:21 But we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem · Israel. Indeed, besides all this, but it is now the third day since these things happened.
24:22 Moreover, some women of our group astonished us: going to the tomb early in the morning
24:23 and not finding · his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive.
24:24 Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as · the women had said, but him they did not see.”
24:25 So he said to them, “You foolish people, · slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
24:26 Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into · his glory?”
24:27 Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the Scriptures.
24:28 When they drew near to the village to which they were going, · he made as though he was going farther,
24:29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is already far spent.” So he went in to stay with them.
24:30 · When he was reclining at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
24:31 At this point their eyes were opened, · and they recognized him. Then he vanished from their sight.
24:32 · They said to each other, “Were not · our hearts burning within us as he spoke to us on the road, as he opened to us the Scriptures?”
24:33 So they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, · where they found the eleven and those with them gathered together,
24:34 saying, “The Lord has indeed been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
24:35 Then the two explained what had happened on the road, and how Jesus had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
24:36 While they were saying these things, · Jesus himself stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace to you.”
24:37 But they were startled and frightened, and thought they were seeing a ghost.
24:38 And he said to them, “Why are you so troubled and why are doubts arising in · your hearts?
24:39 Look at · my hands and · my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
24:40 · When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
24:41 While they still · could not believe it for · joy and were continuing to marvel, he said to them, “Have you anything to eat here?”
24:44 Then he said to them, “These are · my words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything · written in the law of Moses and the prophets and psalms about me must be fulfilled.”
24:45 Then he opened their · minds so they could understand the scriptures,
24:46 and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day,
24:47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in · his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
24:49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you, but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
24:50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up · his hands he blessed them.
24:51 · While · he was blessing them, he departed from them and was carried up into · heaven.
24:52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
24:53 and they were continually in the temple blessing · God.
