3:1 In the fifteenth year · of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governing · Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee and Philip · his brother tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,
3:2 when Annas was high priest, and Caiaphas, the word of God came upon John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
3:3 And he went into the region all around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one calling out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make the paths straight for him.
3:5 Every ravine will be filled in and every mountain and hill will be leveled off; · the crooked places will become straight and the rough places will become smooth roads.
3:6 Then will all flesh see the salvation of God!’”
3:7 So he said to the crowds that were coming out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
3:8 Bear, then, fruits worthy of repentance. · Do not even begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ · For I say to you that God is able, · out of · these stones, to raise up children to Abraham.
3:9 Indeed, already · the axe is laid to the root of the trees; therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
3:10 · The crowds asked him saying, “What, then, shall we do?”
3:11 And he would answer, saying to them, “He who has two tunics, let him share with the one who has none; and he who has food, let him do the same.”
3:12 Tax collectors also came · to be baptized and they said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?”
3:13 And he said to them, “Collect no more than what has been prescribed for you.”
3:14 Soldiers were also questioning · him, saying, “And we, what should we do?” · He said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone, or accuse them falsely; and be content with · your wages.”
3:15 Since the people were filled with anticipation · and all were questioning in · their hearts about · John (“Could he perhaps be the Messiah?”)
3:16 John gave an answer to all, saying, · “I indeed baptize you with water, but there is coming one who is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He it is who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
3:17 His · winnowing fork is in · his hand, to clear · his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into · his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
3:18 And with many other words he exhorted the people, and evangelized them.
3:19 · But Herod the tetrarch, when he was reproved by him concerning Herodias, the wife of his brother, and concerning all the evil things which Herod had done, ·
3:20 added this also to them all: · he confined · John in prison.
3:21 Now when · all the people had been baptized, and when Jesus was baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened,
3:22 and the Holy Spirit descended · on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are · my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
3:23 So Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as it was thought) of Joseph, the son of Helix,
