4:1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
4:2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during · those days, so when they were completed he was hungry.
4:3 The devil said · to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell · this stone to become bread.”
4:4 And Jesus answered him, · “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” ·
4:5 Then he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
4:6 · The devil said to him, “To you I will give · all this authority and · their glory, for to me it has been handed over, and to whomever I desire, I give it.
4:7 If you then will bow down and worship me, all this will be yours.”
4:8 But Jesus answered, · saying to him, “It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord · your God and him only shall you serve.’”
4:9 Then he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here;
4:10 for it is written, ‘To his angels he will give orders concerning you, to protect you,’
4:11 and, ‘On their hands they will raise you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” ·
4:12 But answering Jesus said to him, · “It has been said, ‘You are not to put the Lord · your God to the test.’”
4:13 And when he had completed every kind of temptation, the devil departed from him until a more favorable time.
4:14 Then Jesus returned · in the power of the Spirit to · Galilee, and a report about him spread throughout the whole countryside.
4:15 · He was teaching in · their synagogues, being praised by everyone.
4:16 · He went to Nazareth where he had been brought up and, as was · his custom on the Sabbath day, · he went into the synagogue and stood up to read.
4:17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and when he had unrolled the scroll, he found the place where it was written,
4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send the oppressed away in liberty,
4:19 to proclaim the year acceptable to the Lord.”
4:20 · When he had rolled the scroll and given it back to the attendant, he sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
4:21 And he set about telling them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled · in · your ears.”
4:22 · They were all bearing witness to him in that · they were marveling at the gracious words · that were coming from · his mouth. Then they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
4:23 And he said to them, “No doubt you will quote this proverb to me: · ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ What we have heard happened in · Capernaum, do also here in · your hometown.”
4:24 And he said, “I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in · his hometown.
4:25 But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, · when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, as a great famine spread throughout the whole · land;
4:26 and to none of them was Elijah sent, only to Zarephath, in the territory of Sidon, to a widow woman.
4:27 And there were many lepers in · Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, only Naaman, the Syrian.”
4:28 And everyone in the synagogue was filled with wrath when they heard these things.
4:29 · They rose up, drove him out of the town, and took him to a cliff of the hill on which · their town was built, so that they could cast him down.
4:30 But he passed through their midst and went on his way.
4:31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. · He was teaching them on the Sabbath;
4:32 and they were astonished at · his teaching, because his message was with authority. ·
4:33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,
4:34 “Ha! What do you have to do with us, · Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
4:35 But Jesus rebuked him, · saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.
4:36 · Astonishment came over them all, and they said to one another, “What is · this teaching? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out!”
4:37 So the news about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
4:38 After leaving · from the synagogue, Jesus went to · Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law · was suffering a severe fever, and they made a request to him on her behalf.
4:39 · Standing over her he rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately · she got up and began to wait on them.
4:40 As the sun was going down, · all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him. · · Placing his hands on each one of them, he healed them.
4:41 Also, demons came out · from many, crying out and saying, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ.
4:42 When daylight came · he left and went to a deserted place. And the crowds were looking for him. · They came to him and tried to keep him · from leaving them,
4:43 but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God in the other towns as well; because for this purpose I was sent.”
4:44 So he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
