6:1  · One Sabbath, as Jesus was going through grainfields, · his disciples began to pick · some heads of grain, rub them in their hands, and eat them.
6:2  Some · of the Pharisees asked, “Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”
6:3  · In answer to them Jesus said, · “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him?
6:4  how he entered the house of God, and taking the Bread of the Presence, he ate it and gave some to those with him—which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?”
6:5  Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
6:6  It happened · on another Sabbath that he went into the synagogue and began to teach. · A man was there · · whose right hand · was withered.
6:7  So the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him carefully to see whether he healed on the Sabbath, so that they could find a reason to accuse him.
6:8  But he knew · their thoughts, so he said to the man with the withered · hand, “Get up and stand here in · front.” So he got up and came forward.
6:9  Then Jesus said · to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?”
6:10  · After looking around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out · your hand.” He · did it, and his hand was restored. ·
6:11  But they were filled with senseless anger and began discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.
6:12  It happened · in · those days that Jesus went out to the mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in · prayer to God.
6:13  · When day came, he gathered · his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom · he called apostles:
6:14  Simon (whom · he called Peter), and Andrew · his brother, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew,
6:15  and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called a Zealot,
6:16  and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
6:17  Then, coming down with them from the mountain, he took his stand on a level place. · A large crowd of his disciples was there along with a great number of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and from the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon.
6:18  They had come to hear him speak and to be healed of · their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were healed.
6:19  And all the crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.
6:20  Then, looking up · at · his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
6:21  Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
6:22  Blessed are you when people hate you, · and when they exclude you and insult you and reject · your name as evil on account of the Son of Man!
6:23  Rejoice in that · day, and leap for joy, for behold, · your reward is great in · heaven. For their fathers treated the prophets in the same way. ·
6:24  “But, woe to you who are rich, for you have received · your consolation.
6:25  Woe to you who have had your fill now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.
6:26  Woe to you when all people speak well of you, · for their fathers treated the false prophets in the same way. ·
6:27  “But I say to you who are listening to me: Love · your enemies; do good to those who hate you,
6:28  bless those who curse you; pray for those who threaten you.
6:29  To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from the one who takes your · coat, do not withhold even your shirt.
6:30  To all who ask of you, give, and from the one who takes away what belongs to you, do not demand it back.
6:31  “And as you wish that others would do to you, · do so to them.
6:32  And if you love those who love you, what credit is it to you? For even · sinners love those who love them.
6:33  And if you do good to those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even · sinners do the same.
6:34  And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners that they may receive · in return.
6:35  But love · your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be · great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and evil.
6:36  “Be compassionate, just as · · your Father is compassionate.
6:37  · Do not judge, and you will not be judged; · do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;
6:38  give, and it will be given to you—good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be poured into · your lap. For by what measure you measure, it will be measured in return to you.”
6:39  He spoke · to them also a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Won’t they both fall into a ditch?
6:40  A student is not above his teacher, but everyone when fully prepared will be like · his teacher.
6:41  “Why · do you look at the speck · in the eye of your brother, but do not notice the beam · in · your own eye?
6:42  How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in · your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the log that is in · your own eye? You hypocrite! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s · eye. ·
6:43  “For it is not a good tree that bears bad fruit, nor again, a bad tree that bears good fruit,
6:44  for each tree is known by · its own fruit. For they do not gather figs from thornbushes, nor do they pick grapes from brambles.
6:45  The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces · good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces · evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. ·
6:46  “Why · do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
6:47  Everyone who comes to me and hears my · words and does them—I will show you whom he is like:
6:48  he is like a man building a house, who dug · deep and laid the foundation on · bedrock; when a flood · arose, the river broke against · that house but could not shake it, because · it had been well built.
6:49  But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man building a house on the ground without a foundation; when the river burst against it, · immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
