7:1 After he had finished speaking all · his sayings in the ears of the people, he entered Capernaum.
7:2 The servant of a certain centurion · who was highly valued by him was sick and about to die.
7:3 When the centurion heard · about · Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and heal · his servant.
7:4 And when they came to · Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy that you should grant this,
7:5 for he loves · our nation and he built the synagogue for us.”
7:6 · So Jesus went with them. And when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy that you should come under · my roof.
7:7 For that reason I did not consider myself worthy to come to you. But speak the word and let my servant be healed. ·
7:8 For I too am a man set under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
7:9 When Jesus heard · these things, · he admired him. · Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, not even in · Israel have I found such faith.”
7:10 · Returning to the house, those who had been sent found the servant in good health.
7:11 · It happened soon afterward · that Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. ·
7:12 As · Jesus approached the gate of the town, · a man who had died was being carried out—the only son of his mother · (she was a widow). · A large crowd from the town was with her.
7:13 · Seeing her, the Lord had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”
7:14 · He went up and touched the coffin, and those who carried it stopped. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!”
7:15 · The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.
7:16 Fear gripped · them all, and they glorified · God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has come to help · · his people!”
7:17 · This report about Jesus spread · throughout · Judea and all the surrounding area.
7:18 · The disciples of John told him about all these things. · Calling two of his disciples, · John
7:19 sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?”
7:20 The men went · to Jesus and said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”
7:21 In that · hour he healed many people of diseases, · sicknesses and evil spirits; and to many who were blind he gave the ability to see.
7:22 Then he answered, saying to them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them.
7:23 And blessed is whoever is not offended by me.”
7:24 When John’s messengers left, · · Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed being shaken by the wind?
7:25 But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in luxurious clothing? Those who wear expensive clothing and live in luxury are found in · royal palaces.
7:26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.
7:27 This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I am sending · my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare · your way before you.’
7:28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
7:29 · When all the people including the tax collectors (those who had been baptized with the baptism of John) heard this, they declared · God just;
7:30 but the Pharisees and the lawyers (those who had not been baptized by John) rejected the purpose of God for themselves.
7:31 “To what then shall I compare the people of this generation? · What are they like?
7:32 They are like children · sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, they are saying, ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance; we wailed in mourning, but you did not weep.’
7:33 For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’
7:34 The Son of Man has come both eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look! A man, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
7:35 Nevertheless, wisdom is proved right · by all · her children.”
7:36 Now one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, so he went into the house of the Pharisee and took his place at table.
7:37 Now there was a woman known in the city as a sinner, and when she learned that Jesus was reclining at table in the house of the Pharisee, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume,
7:38 and standing behind him at · his feet, weeping, she began to bathe his feet with her tears. · · She kept wiping his feet with the hair of her head, and kissing them and pouring the perfume on them.
7:39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw · this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of · woman this is who is touching him—that she is a sinner.”
7:40 And Jesus, answering, · said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he said, “Teacher, say it.”
7:41 “There were two debtors to a certain moneylender. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.
7:42 When they were unable to pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
7:43 Simon answered, saying, “I suppose it would be the one for whom he cancelled the greater debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged correctly.”
7:44 Then turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, “You see this · woman? I came into your · house; you did not provide water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears · and wiped them with her hair.
7:45 You did not give me a kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my · feet.
7:46 You did not anoint my head with oil, · but she has poured perfume on · my feet.
7:47 Therefore I can tell you, “Her sins, which were many, have been forgiven, · for she loved much. But the one to whom little is forgiven loves little.’”
7:48 He said · to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” ·
7:49 Then those reclining at table with him began to say to themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?”
7:50 He said · to the woman, · “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
