8:1  · It happened that soon afterward Jesus began to travel around from one town and village to another, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. · The twelve disciples were with him,
8:2  as well as certain women who had been healed from evil spirits and diseases (Mary who is called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
8:3  and Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna) and many other women who cared for their needs out of · their own resources.
8:4  As a large crowd was gathering · and people were coming to Jesus from one town after another, he spoke using a parable.
8:5  “A sower went out · to sow · his seed. And as · he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of heaven devoured it.
8:6  · Other seed fell on · rock, and when it came up, it withered away, because · it had no moisture.
8:7  · Other seed fell in the middle of thorns, and when the thorns came up with it, they choked it.
8:8  · Other seed fell into · good soil, · and when it came up, it produced fruit a hundredfold.” As he was saying these things he began to call out, “Let the one who has ears to hear, hear.”
8:9  Now his disciples were questioning him · as to what this parable meant. ·
8:10  He · said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but to the rest I speak in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
8:11  “Now this is what the parable means: The seed is the word of God.
8:12  Those · along the path are the ones who hear—then the devil comes and takes away the word from · their heart, so that they may not believe and be saved.
8:13  Those · that fall on · rock are the ones who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but they have no root—they believe for a while but in a time of testing they fall away.
8:14  As for what fell among the thorns—these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and they do not bring fruit to maturity.
8:15  But as for that in the good soil—these are the ones who, having heard with an honest and good heart, hold firmly onto the word and bear fruit through patient endurance.
8:16  “No one · after lighting a lamp covers it with a container or puts it under a bed, but places it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.
8:17  For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor secret that will not be known and come to light.
8:18  “Take care, then, how you hear! For whoever has—more will be given to him; and whoever does not have—even what he seems to have will be taken away from him.”
8:19  The mother of Jesus and his brothers came · to him, · but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.
8:20  It was reported · to him, · “Your mother and · your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.”
8:21  In response he · said to them, “Those who hear and do the word of God are my mother and my brothers.”
8:22  It happened · in one of those days · that he and his disciples got into a boat, · and he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side of the lake.” So they put out from shore.
8:23  As they were sailing along, · he fell asleep, and a windstorm swept down on the lake and they were being swamped and were in danger.
8:24  They went · to Jesus and woke him up, saying, “Master, Master, we are about to perish!” Having been awakened he · rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they stopped, and there was a calm.
8:25  He said · to them, “Where is · your faith?” They were afraid · and amazed, saying to one another, “Who, then, is this that he commands even the winds and the water and they obey him?”
8:26  Then they came to land in the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.
8:27  When he stepped out · on the land, a man from the town met him, who was possessed by demons, and for a long time had not worn clothes or had not lived in a house but among the tombs.
8:28  When he saw · · Jesus, he cried out and fell prostate before him and in a loud voice said, “What have I · to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? · I beg you, do not torment me!?”
8:29  For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit · to come out of the man; for many times it had seized him and he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.
8:30  Jesus asked · him, · “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion.” (For many demons had entered into him.)
8:31  And they begged him not to order them to go away into the abyss.
8:32  A large herd of pigs was · grazing there on the hillside; and the demons begged Jesus to permit them to go into them, and he gave them permission.
8:33  The demons came out · of the man and went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.
8:34  When the herdsmen saw · what had happened, they fled and reported it in the town and in the countryside.
8:35  Then people went out to see what happened, and they came to · Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had come out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
8:36  Those who had seen it told · them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.
8:37  Then all the people of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to go away from them, because they were seized with a great fear. So he got into a boat and returned.
8:38  But the man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,
8:39  “Return to · your house and declare how much God has done for you.” · And he went about the whole city proclaiming what Jesus had done for him. ·
8:40  As · · Jesus was returning · the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him.
8:41  Just then there came a man named Jairus. · This man was a ruler of the synagogue, and he fell at the feet of Jesus and implored him to come into · his house,
8:42  because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. As · · he went, the crowds were pressing in on him.
8:43  Now there was a woman who had suffered a flow of blood for twelve years, but she was not able to be healed by anyone.
8:44  She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak and at once her flow of blood stopped. ·
8:45  And Jesus said, · “Who was it who touched me?” As everyone denied it, · Peter said, · “Master, the crowds are pressing in on all sides and crowding you.”
8:46  · But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I was aware of power going out from me.”
8:47  Seeing · that she had not escaped notice, the woman stepped forward, trembling, and fell down before him. She declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been healed at once.
8:48  Then Jesus said to her, “Daughter, · your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
8:49  While he was still speaking, someone came from the house of the synagogue-ruler, saying, “Your daughter is dead; · do not bother the Teacher any longer.”
8:50  · · When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “Do not be afraid, only believe, and she will get better.”
8:51  When he went · into the house he did not allow anyone to go in with him except Peter and John and James, and the father of the child and her mother.
8:52  And all the people were weeping and mourning for her. He · said, “Stop weeping, for she did not die; but is sleeping.”
8:53  And they laughed at him, knowing that she had died.
8:54  But taking her by the hand, he called out, saying, · “Child, arise!”
8:55  And her spirit returned, · and she got up at once. · He commanded that something be given her to eat.
8:56  · Her parents were astonished; · but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.
