9:1 And he called together the twelve and gave them power and authority over all · demons, and to cure diseases.
9:2 Then he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
9:3 · He said to them, “Take nothing on the journey—no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money. No one is to have two tunics.
9:4 And whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there go out.
9:5 And wherever they do not receive you, leave from · that town and shake off the dust from · your feet as an act that testifies against them.”
9:6 So they set out and traveled throughout the villages, preaching the good news and healing everywhere.
9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed because · it was being said by some that John had been raised from the dead,
9:8 by some · that Elijah had appeared, and by others that a certain one of the ancient prophets had risen.
9:9 Herod said, · “John I beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” So he was trying to see him.
9:10 · When the apostles returned they recounted to Jesus all they had done; and he took them and withdrew privately to a town called Bethsaida.
9:11 When the · crowds found out about it, they followed him. So he welcomed them, and spoke to them about the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.
9:12 Now the day began to wear away, so the twelve came and said to him, “Send the crowd away so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and secure lodging and get provisions, for we are in a desolate place here.”
9:13 But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They · said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all · these people.”
9:14 For there were about five thousand men. He said · to · his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
9:16 Taking · the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to · heaven and said a blessing and broke them; then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the crowd.
9:17 · They ate and all were satisfied. · What was left over was gathered up by them, twelve baskets of broken pieces.
9:18 Now it happened that as · he was praying by himself, the disciples were near him. · He asked them, saying, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”
9:19 They · replied, saying, “John the Baptist; others · say, Elijah; still others that one of the ancient prophets has risen.”
9:20 Then he said to them, “Now you, who do you say that I am?” And Peter replied, “The Christ of God.”
9:21 Then, with a warning, he commanded them to tell no one this,
9:22 saying, “It is necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and to be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and to be killed, and on the third day to be raised.”
9:23 Then he said to all, “If someone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and let him take up · his cross daily, and let him follow me.
9:24 For whoever wants to save · his life will lose it, but whoever loses · his life for my sake, this person will save it.
9:25 For what good will it do a person who has gained the whole world but has lost or forfeited his very self?
9:26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of · my words, of this one will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
9:27 But I tell you most certainly: There are some of those standing here who will certainly not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”
9:28 About eight days after these sayings, it happened that · · he went up on the mountain to pray, · taking along Peter and John and James.
9:29 · As · he was praying, the appearance of his face was changed, and · his clothing turned a dazzling white,
9:30 and two men were talking with him; they were Moses and Elijah,
9:31 who had appeared with glorious splendor and were speaking of · his departure, which he was soon to accomplish at Jerusalem.
9:32 · · Peter and those who were with him were weighed down with sleep, but they kept awake and saw · his glory and the two men who were standing with him.
9:33 · As · the men were about to leave him, Peter said · to · Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. · Let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he was saying.
9:34 While he was saying these things, · a cloud came and enveloped them; and they were afraid as · they entered the cloud.
9:35 Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is · my Son, the Chosen One; listen to him!”
9:36 And when · the voice had spoken, Jesus was found to be alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those · days anything of what they had seen.
9:37 Now on the next day, it so happened that when they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.
9:38 · Suddenly a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look with pity on · my son, because he is my only child;
9:39 and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it throws him into convulsions and causes him to foam at the mouth; and with difficulty it departs from him, bruising him as it leaves.
9:40 And I begged · your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”
9:41 In answer · · Jesus said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” ·
9:42 While · he was on his way, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked · the unclean spirit, · · healed the child, and gave him back to his father.
9:43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God. While they were all · still marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to · his disciples,
9:44 “Let these words sink into · your ears: · For the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”
9:45 But they did not understand · this saying. · It was concealed from them, so that they might not understand it; and they were afraid to ask him about · this saying.
9:46 An argument arose · among them · as to which of them might be the greatest.
9:47 · But Jesus, aware of the reasoning of their heart, took a child, had him stand at his side,
9:48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this · child in · my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. So the one who is least among you all, this is the one who is great.”
9:49 Answering, · John said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in · your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow you with us.”
9:50 Jesus said · to him, · “Do not try to stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”
9:51 Now when the days of his ascension drew near, · Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem.
9:52 · He sent messengers before his face. · Having set off, they entered a village of the Samaritans, in order to prepare for him.
9:53 But they did not receive him, because · his face was set toward Jerusalem.
9:54 Seeing · this, his disciples James and John said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from · heaven and consume them?”
9:57 · As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you are heading.”
9:58 · Jesus said to him, · · “Foxes have holes, and · birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
9:59 He said · to another person, “Follow me.” But that one said, “Lord, let me first go and bury · my father.”
9:60 Jesus said · to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
9:61 Yet another said, · “I will follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to those at · my home.”
9:62 Jesus said · to him, · “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back · is fit for the kingdom of God.”
