13:1 And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look, what massive stones and what magnificent buildings!”
13:2 And · Jesus said to him, “Do you see these · great buildings? Not a single stone will be left here resting on another that will not be thrown down.”
13:3 So while he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew questioned him privately. · ·
13:4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to take place?”
13:5 · And Jesus began to speak to them, “Watch out lest someone mislead you.
13:6 Many will come in · my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and they will deceive many.
13:7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; those things must happen, but the end is not yet.
13:8 For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
13:9 But watch out for yourselves; they will deliver you over to local councils, and in synagogues you will be beaten, and before governors and kings you will be made to stand for my sake, to bear witness to them.
13:10 · First the gospel must be preached to every · nation.
13:11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not worry ahead of time what you should say, but whatever is given you in that · hour, speak; for you are not the ones who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. ·
13:12 And brother will deliver over brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up in rebellion against parents and have them put to death.
13:13 And you will be hated by all on account of · my name. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.
13:14 “When · you see the ‘abomination of desolation’ standing where he should not be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in · Judea flee to the mountains.
13:15 Let the one · who is on the housetop not come down, nor enter his house to remove anything from it; ·
13:16 and let the one who is in the field not return · to get · his cloak.
13:17 But woe to those women who are pregnant and to those who are nursing in those · days.
13:18 And pray that it may not happen during winter,
13:19 because those will be · days of such tribulation as has never happened from the beginning of creation, which God created, · until · now, nor ever will be.
13:20 And unless the Lord had cut short the number of days, no one would survive; but on account of the elect, whom he chose, he cut short the days.
13:21 And then if someone should say to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’—do not believe it.
13:22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and will offer signs and wonders in order to · deceive, if possible, the elect.
13:23 But you, beware; I have told you all this in advance.
13:24 But in those · days, after · that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give · its light,
13:25 and the stars will be falling from · heaven, and the powers · in the heavens will be shaken.
13:26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds, with great power and glory.
13:27 And at that time he will send his angels, and will gather · his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
13:28 “Now from the fig tree learn its parable: As soon as · its bough becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. ·
13:29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the gates.
13:30 I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass away · until all these things begin to take place.
13:31 · Heaven and · earth will pass away, · but my words will never pass away.
13:32 But of · that day or · hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
13:33 Watch out, be alert, for you do not know when the time will come.
13:34 It is like a man going on a journey. He left · his home and gave authority to his servants, · to each one · his work, and he ordered the doorkeeper to stay alert.
13:35 So stay alert—for you do not know when the master of the house will return, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cock crowing, or toward daybreak—
13:36 lest coming suddenly he should find you sleeping.
13:37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Stay alert!”
