14:1 It was now two days before the Passover and · Festival of Unleavened Bread. And the ruling priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize him by treachery and put him to death,
14:2 but they were saying, “Not during the festival, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
14:3 And while he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he reclined at table, there came a woman with an alabaster flask of very costly anointment of pure nard; and breaking the flask, she poured it over his · head.
14:4 But some were indignant, and began saying to themselves, “For what purpose was · this waste of ointment?
14:5 For this ointment could · have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
14:6 · But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you causing her trouble? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
14:7 For you will always have the poor with you, and whenever you want you can do something good for them, but you will not always have me.
14:8 She has done what she could; she has anointed · my body beforehand for · burial.
14:9 I tell you the truth, · wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”
14:10 Then Judas Iscariot, · one of the twelve, went to the ruling priests so he might hand Jesus over to them.
14:11 And when they heard it, they were pleased and promised to give him money. So Judas was seeking how he might hand him over at a convenient moment.
14:12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when people were slaughtering the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, · “Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
14:13 And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him.
14:14 And wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is · my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with · my disciples?”’
14:15 And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready; · there prepare for us.”
14:16 · The disciples left, · came to the city, and found things just as he had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
14:17 And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.
14:18 And while they were reclining at table and eating, · Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”
14:19 They began to be grieved and to say to him one after the other, “Surely not I?”
14:20 He · said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping his bread into the bowl with me.
14:21 For the Son of Man is going as it is written of him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed—better for him if that man had not been born.” ·
14:22 And while they were eating, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them and said, “Take; this is · my body.”
14:23 And when he had taken the cup and given thanks, he passed it to them, and they all drank from it.
14:24 And he said to them, “This is · my blood of the covenant, which is poured out in behalf of many.
14:25 I tell you the truth, I will not again drink from the fruit of the vine until · that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
14:26 Then after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
14:27 And Jesus said to them, · “All of you will fall away, because it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
14:28 But after · I am raised up, I will go on ahead of you into · Galilee.”
14:29 · · Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not!”
14:30 And Jesus said to him, · “I tell you the truth, today—this very night, before the rooster crows twice—you will deny me three times.”
14:31 But Peter exclaimed vehemently, “Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you!” And all the others repeated the same thing. ·
14:32 And they went to a place that · was named Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
14:33 And he took along · Peter and · James and · John with him, and began to be distressed and troubled.
14:34 And he said to them, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, · even to the point of death; remain here and stay alert.”
14:35 And going on a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass him by.
14:36 And he said, “Abba, · Father, all things are possible for you. Remove · this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
14:37 Then he returned and found them sleeping. So he said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to stay alert for one hour?”
14:38 Stay alert and pray so that you will not come into temptation; the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”
14:39 And again, going away, he prayed, saying the same thing.
14:40 And again, returning, he found them sleeping, for their eyes were · heavy, and they did not know how they should answer him.
14:41 And he returned · a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping · and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
14:42 Get up, let us be on our way; see, · my betrayer has arrived.”
14:43 And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, appeared, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the ruling priests and the scribes and the elders.
14:44 Now his betrayer had given · them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss, it is he. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”
14:45 And when Judas arrived, immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.
14:46 And they laid · hands on him and seized him.
14:47 But one of those standing by, having drawn his sword, struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his · ear.
14:48 And responding, · Jesus said to them, “As against a robber have you come out with swords and clubs to take me?
14:49 Daily I was with you in the temple, teaching, and you did not seize me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
14:51 And a certain young man was following him, with a linen cloth wrapped around his naked body; and they tried to seize him,
14:52 but leaving behind the linen cloth, he ran away naked
14:53 And they led · Jesus to the high priest; and all the ruling priests and the elders and the scribes came together.
14:54 And · Peter followed him from a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest, and he was sitting with the officers and warming himself at the fire.
14:55 Now the ruling priests and the entire council were seeking testimony against · Jesus to · put him to death, but they were not finding any.
14:56 For many were giving false testimony against him, but their testimonies were not in agreement.
14:57 And some, standing up, were giving false testimony against him, saying,
14:58 “We heard him saying, ‘I will destroy · this temple · made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands.’”
14:59 Yet not even about this was their testimony in agreement. ·
14:60 Then the high priest, standing up in their midst, asked · Jesus, saying, “Are you not going to reply to what these men are testifying against you?”
14:61 But he remained silent and answered back nothing. Again the high priest questioned him and said to him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed?”
14:62 · And Jesus said, “I am; and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
14:63 · And the high priest, tearing · his garments, said, “Why do we still have need of witnesses?
14:64 You have heard the blasphemy! What appears to be right to you?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.
14:65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his · face, and to strike him, and to say to him, “Prophesy!” Even the officers received him with slaps to the face.
14:66 And while Peter was · below in the courtyard, one of the maid servants of the high priest came by,
14:67 and seeing · Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, · Jesus.”
14:68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out into the exterior court, and a rooster crowed.
14:69 And the maid servant, seeing him, began again to say to those who were standing around, “This man is one of them.”
14:70 But again he denied it. And after a little while again those standing around said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you also are a Galilean.”
14:71 Then Peter began to call down curses on himself and to swear, “I do not know · this man of whom you speak!”
14:72 And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Then Peter remembered · the word that Jesus had said to him, · “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And upon reflection, he broke into tears.
