15:1 · As soon as it was morning, the ruling priests, after holding a consultation with the elders and scribes and the entire council, bound · Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
15:2 And Pilate questioned him, · “Are you the king of the Jews?” And answering him, he said, “You say it.”
15:3 And the ruling priests accused him repeatedly.
15:4 · Then Pilate questioned him again, saying, “Do you answer nothing? See how many accusations they are bringing against you.”
15:5 · But Jesus no longer gave any reply, so that Pilate was amazed. ·
15:6 Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested.
15:7 · Among the rebels in prison, who in the insurrection had committed murder, there was a man called Barabbas.
15:8 And coming up, the crowd began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.
15:9 · So Pilate responded to them, saying, “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”
15:10 For he knew that the ruling priests had handed Jesus over out of envy.
15:11 But the ruling priests stirred up the crowd so that Pilate would release Barabbas to them instead. ·
15:12 · And Pilate, answering again said to them, “What, then, do you want me to do with the man you call the king of the Jews?”
15:14 · And Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they cried out all the more, “Crucify him!”
15:15 · So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, · released to them · Barabbas; and having scourged Jesus, he handed him over · to be crucified.
15:16 And the soldiers led him away into the palace (that is, the praetorium) and they called together the whole company of soldiers.
15:17 And they clothed him in purple; and twisting some thorns into a crown, they placed it on him.
15:18 Then they began to greet him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”
15:19 And they kept striking his · head with a staff and spitting on him; and falling to their knees, they paid homage to him.
15:20 And when they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. · Then they led him out to crucify him.
15:21 And they conscripted a certain passerby, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), as he was coming in from the country, to bear · his cross.
15:22 And they brought him to the place Golgotha, (which means, Place of the Skull).
15:23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he would not take it.
15:24 Then they crucified him and divided · his clothing, casting lots for them, to see who would take what.
15:25 It was · the third hour, and they crucified him.
15:26 And the inscription giving the accusation against him read, “The King of the Jews.”
15:27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.
15:29 And those passing by ridiculed him, wagging · their heads, and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
15:30 come down from the cross and save yourself.”
15:31 So also the ruling priests, mocking among themselves, with the scribes, were saying, “Others he saved; himself he can not save!
15:32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe.” And those crucified with him were reviling him.
15:33 And when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.
15:34 And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried · with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, · “My God, · my God, why did you forsake me?”
15:35 And when some of the bystanders heard this, they said, “Listen, he is calling Elijah!”
15:36 Then someone ran, · filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a staff, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Permit me; let us see if Elijah will come to take him down.”
15:37 · And Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed his last.
15:38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
15:39 And when the centurion, who was standing in front of him, saw that in this way he had died, he said, “Truly, this · man was the son of God!”
15:40 There were · also women there, watching from a distance, among whom · were Mary · Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome,
15:41 who, when he was in · Galilee, used to follow him and care for his needs; and many other women were there who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
15:42 And when evening had already come, since it was the day of Preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
15:43 Joseph · of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who also himself was expecting the kingdom of God, went boldly to · Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
15:44 · · Pilate was surprised that he was already dead, so summoning the centurion, he asked him if he had been dead for a long time.
15:45 And learning from the centurion that he was dead, he gave the corpse to Joseph.
15:46 So he brought a linen shroud, and taking him down, he wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb, which had been hewn out of rock; and he rolled a stone across the entrance of the tomb.
15:47 · · Mary · Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching closely where he was laid.
