7:1  · The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus
7:2  and noticed that some of his disciples were eating the loaves with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed.
7:3  (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they ceremonially wash their hands, thus maintaining the tradition of the elders.
7:4  · They do not eat anything from the marketplace unless it is purified by washing. And there are many other customs that they have received as tradition to keep, like the washing of cups, · pots, · copper bowls, and dining couches.)
7:5  And the Pharisees and · scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk · according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands?”
7:6  And he said to them, “Isaiah prophesied accurately about you · hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This · people honors me with their lips, · but their heart is far from me.
7:7  In vain · do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’
7:8  Neglecting the command of God, you maintain the tradition of men.”
7:9  And he said to them, “You are clever at setting aside the command of God in order to · establish your own tradition.
7:10  For Moses said, ‘Honor · your father and · your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.’
7:11  But you say, ‘If a man says to his father or · mother, “Whatever help you might have received from me is Corban” (that is, given to God),
7:12  then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or · mother.
7:13  Thus you invalidate the word of God with your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many similar things.”
7:14  · Calling the crowd to him again, he said to them, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand.
7:15  There is nothing from outside a man that enters him that is able to defile him. Rather the things that come out of a man are the things that defile · him.”
7:17  And when Jesus entered the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him · about the parable.
7:18  So he said to them, “Are you too so lacking in understanding? Do you not know that whatever comes into a man · from outside · is not able to defile him,
7:19  because it does not enter his · heart, but his stomach, and goes out into the latrine?” (Thus he declared all · foods clean.)
7:20  And he said, “What comes out of a person, that is what defiles · him.
7:21  For from within, from the heart of a person, come evil · plots, · immoralities, thefts, murders,
7:22  adulteries, greedy actions, wicked deeds, deceit, sensuality, selfishness, slander, arrogance, lack of moral sense.
7:23  All these · evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
7:24  From there · Jesus arose and went to the region of Tyre. · He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it, yet he was not able to escape attention.
7:25  But immediately after hearing of him, a woman whose daughter had · an unclean spirit came and fell at · his feet.
7:26  The · woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by birth. · She begged Jesus to drive out the demon from · her daughter.
7:27  · He said to her, “Let the children first be fed, for it is not right to take the children’s bread · and throw it to the dogs.”
7:28  · But she answered him, · saying, “Lord, even the dogs under the table feed from the children’s crumbs.” ·
7:29  And he said to her, “Because of this · reply, you may go; the demon has left · your daughter.”
7:30  And when she arrived at · her house, she found the child lying on the bed, · the demon having departed.
7:31  · Departing again from the region of Tyre, Jesus went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the midst of the region of the Decapolis.
7:32  And they brought to him a deaf man · who could hardly speak, and they begged him to lay his hand on him.
7:33  · Taking him aside from the crowd privately, Jesus put · his fingers into the man’s ears, and after spitting, he touched · his tongue.
7:34  · Looking up to · heaven, he gave a deep sigh and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened”).
7:35  And immediately the man’s ears were opened, · · that which bound his tongue was loosened, · and he began to speak clearly.
7:36  · Jesus ordered them to tell no one, but the more he ordered them, the more they spread the news.
7:37  · They were absolutely astonished, saying, “He has done all things well. · He makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak!”
