8:1 In those · days, when once again a large crowd had gathered, and not having anything to eat, Jesus called his disciples and said to them,
8:2 “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have stayed with me three days already and they do not have anything to eat.
8:3 · If I send them to their homes without food, they will faint from exhaustion on the way; and some of them have come from a distance.”
8:4 And his disciples answered him, · “From what source can anyone feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?”
8:5 And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They · said, “Seven.”
8:6 So he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. · Taking the seven loaves and giving thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute. So they distributed the bread to the crowd.
8:7 They also had a few small fish. · Blessing these, Jesus told them to distribute these as well.
8:8 And they ate and were filled. And they picked up seven baskets of leftover pieces.
8:9 There were · about four thousand present, and he sent them on their way.
8:10 And immediately he got into the boat with · his disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.
8:11 · The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from · heaven, testing him.
8:12 · Sighing deeply in his spirit, he said, “Why does · this generation seek a sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to this generation.”
8:13 Then he left them, got into the boat again, and crossed to the other side.
8:14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take along loaves of bread, · except for one loaf they had with them in the boat.
8:15 And Jesus began to admonish them, saying, “Watch out! Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod!”
8:16 And they kept discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread.
8:17 · Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Do you have hardened · hearts?
8:18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?
8:19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” They said to him, “Twelve.”
8:20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you pick up?” And they said, “Seven.”
8:21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
8:22 And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.
8:23 And taking the hand of the blind man, he led him outside the village. Then, after moistening the eyes of the blind man with saliva and laying his hands on him, Jesus asked him, “What do you see?”
8:24 · Upon regaining his sight, he said, “I see · people walking, but I see them as trees.”
8:25 Then Jesus again put his hands on the man’s eyes, and he saw clearly. · His sight was restored, and he saw everything distinctly.
8:26 And Jesus sent him to his home, saying, “Do not go back into the village.”
8:27 And · Jesus and · his disciples went on to the villages of Caesarea · Philippi. · On the way he questioned · his disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say I · am?”
8:28 So they answered him, saying, “John the baptizer; and others, Elijah; but others, one of the prophets.”
8:29 And he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter answered, · saying to him, “You are the Christ.”
8:30 And he strictly warned them not to tell anyone about him.
8:31 Then Jesus began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the ruling priests and · scribes, and be killed and after three days to rise again.
8:32 And he was speaking openly about this. So Peter took · him aside and began to rebuke him.
8:33 But after turning and looking at · his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not thinking the thoughts of God, but those of men.”
8:34 · When he had called the crowd with · his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, · take up · his cross and follow me.
8:35 For whoever wishes to save · his life will lose it, but whoever will lose · his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.
8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit · his life?
8:37 Or what can a man give in exchange for · his life?
8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and · my words in · this · adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with his holy angels.” ·
