9:1  And he said to them, “I tell you the truth, there are some standing here · who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God having come with power.”
9:2  And after six days Jesus took · with him · Peter and · James and · John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them,
9:3  and · his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no launderer on · earth could bleach them.
9:4  And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with · Jesus.
9:5  And answering, · Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. · Let us make three shelters: one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—
9:6  for he did not know what he should reply, because they were so frightened.
9:7  Then a cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is · my Son, the beloved, listen to him!”
9:8  And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone, but only · Jesus with them.
9:9  And as they were coming down from the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man should rise from the dead.
9:10  So they kept this saying to themselves, questioning what the “rising of the dead” could mean.
9:11  And they asked him, saying, “Why do the scribes say, ‘Elijah must come first’?”
9:12  And he said to them, “Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Yet how is it written about the Son of Man? That he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt?
9:13  But I tell you that · Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, just as it is written about him.”
9:14  And when they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them.
9:15  And immediately the entire crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running up to him, they greeted him.
9:16  And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?”
9:17  And one of the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought · my son to you, who has a mute spirit.
9:18  And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked · your disciples to cast it out, but they were not able.”
9:19  Answering them he · said, “O unbelieving generation! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”
9:20  And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed him; and falling on the ground, the boy began to roll about, foaming at the mouth.
9:21  And Jesus asked · his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “Since childhood;
9:22  indeed frequently it has even cast him into fire and into water to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
9:23  · And Jesus said to him, · “‘If you can’! All things are possible for the one who has faith.”
9:24  Immediately the father of the boy cried out and said, “I believe; help my · unbelief!”
9:25  When Jesus saw · · that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, · saying to it, · “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again!”
9:26  · After crying out and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out; and the boy was like a corpse, so that · many were saying, “He is dead.”
9:27  · But Jesus, taking him by the hand, lifted him up, and he stood up.
9:28  And when he had entered the house, · his disciples asked him in private, “Why were we not able to cast it out?”
9:29  And he said to them, “This · kind cannot come out except by prayer.”
9:30  And leaving there, they went on through · Galilee. And Jesus did not want anyone to know about it;
9:31  for he was teaching · his disciples and saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. Then three days after he has been killed, he will rise.
9:32  But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him.
9:33  And they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house, he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?”
9:34  But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued among themselves about who was the greatest.
9:35  And sitting down, he called the twelve and said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
9:36  And taking a child, he put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,
9:37  “Whoever receives one of these children in · my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the one who sent me.”
9:38  John said to him, · “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in · your name, and we tried to stop him because he was not following us.”
9:39  · But Jesus said, “Do not stop him, for there is no one who will do a mighty work in · my name and be able soon after to speak evil of me.
9:40  For whoever is not against us is for us.
9:41  For I tell you the truth, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will most certainly not lose · his reward.
9:42  “And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a large millstone were hung around · his neck and he were thrown into the sea.
9:43  And if your hand causes you to sin, · cut it off; it is better for you to enter into · life crippled than having · two hands to go to · hell, to the unquenchable fire. ·
9:45  And if · your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into · life lame than having · two feet to be cast into · hell.
9:47  And if · your eye causes you to sin, throw it away; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God having one eye than having two eyes to be cast into · hell,
9:48  where · ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’
9:49  For everyone will be salted with fire.
9:50  Salt is good, · but if the salt has become unsalty, with what will you make it savory? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
