1:1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of the elect of God and the knowledge of the truth that produces godliness,
1:2 for the sake of the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before times eternal,
1:3 and revealed his word at the proper time · in the proclamation, with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior,
1:4 to Titus, a true son in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus · our Savior.
1:5 For this reason I left you in Crete, so that you might put right the remaining things and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you—
1:6 if anyone is above reproach, a man of one woman, having believing children, not open to the charge of debauchery or being rebellious.
1:7 For it is necessary for an overseer to be above reproach as a steward of God, not arrogant, not quick-tempered, not a drunkard, not violent, not greedy for gain,
1:8 but hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, just, holy, disciplined,
1:9 holding fast to the trustworthy word that is in accordance with the teaching, so that he might be able both to exhort with · healthy doctrine · and to rebuke those who oppose it.
1:10 For there are many rebellious people, senseless babblers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision.
1:11 It is therefore necessary to muzzle those who are upsetting entire households by teaching what is not proper for shameful gain.
1:12 One of them, their own prophet, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
1:13 · This testimony is true, for which reason rebuke them sharply, so that they may be healthy in the faith,
1:14 not being devoted to Jewish myths and commandments of people who are turning away from the truth.
1:15 All things are clean to the clean, but to the defiled and unbelieving nothing is clean, but both their · mind and · conscience are defiled.
1:16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny him, being abominable and disobedient and worthless for any good work.
